Is the band among us? |
I read somewhere years ago that members of the GD would sometimes put on disguises and walk around the parking lot before or after a show - trying to stay in touch with the audiance. True or not, think they visit here to get an idea of what it is like to be a fan?
Also, think the recent Blair Jackson blog on Dead.net is inspired by this place?

Re: Blair Jackson's blog (sorry, Phish fans) |
Uhhhhh ... in disguise in the lot? What, with Groucho Marx glasses? Why do I not believe that?
Gee, if anyone does ever check this site, I hope they caught my secret twin post. Bob! Look! You were Luke Skywalker, and now you're Obi Wan Kenobi!
Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if anyone who writes a GD blog checks this forum and others, cuz that's what writers do for a living. Screw around on the net and tell themselves they're doing research. I know this for a fact, what with being a writer and all :-)
(Blair Jackson: "Got a piece to write. Let's see. Had some coffee. Took a walk. What to talk about today? Hmmm, what's up with those obsessives on the forum? Oh, secret twins again? Best Toodle-Oo? OK, more coffee.")
Actually that's a good topic over at Deadnet. Which we've explored at length here, of course.
Oh, and Blair, if you read this: Good take on it! (Since you agree with me.) Phish: Zzzzzz. Railroad Earth: Fine band. (Of course, I could go over there and comment. But I don't need two GD places to babble away on.)

Re: Blair Jackson's blog (sorry, Phish fans) |
Actually, I definitely read somewhere I recall as authoritative that the "in disguise in the lot" thing is true - Bob Weir got dressed up in some kind of full body tracksuit with mask painted with skeleton bones and had a friend take him on a tour of the parking lot scene sometime during the megadead stadium era. One of my references on this might be in that same "Goin Down the Road" Blair Jackson book with interviews I lost ten+ years ago.

Really? That's too funny. Hard to believe it would be any kind of regular thing, but a one-timer by Bob ... LOL. Anyone got the reference?
So I guess that Barney I saw walking around the lot must have been Phil ...

Re: close encounters AKA in-the-crowd band sightings |
Doesn't anyone else have actual sightings of the band in the crowd?
2 personal band sightings:
10.23.89 foggy after show parking lot scene- Bobby was definitely riding around on a mountain bike. I had met Bob a couple of times before, and he rode right past me...
7.18.90 (my B'day) intermission Brent was walking through the crowd! from the soundboard to the stage-nobody even acknowledged him. My wife tried to get me to say hello, but I wasn't certain enough until he walked onto the stage (Brent look alikes were then common)- & I didn't want to invade his space...
...which brings up my Jerry sighting at the Omni in Oakland 12-86 for the Go Ahead show. The Omni was a bar with table seating. Jerry was at a table watching the show, & my friend even got an autograph. I didn't want to invade his space....
Come on Forumites. Share your close encounters.

Well, I met Mickey once. He wasn't in disguise, though. Unless he was dressed as Spock and I just couldn't tell the difference :-)

Re: Blair Jackson's blog (sorry, Phish fans) |
It does seem hard to believe. I don't remember the source - just something that stuck in my head from years ago.
Here is something else I remember reading about (from the Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction file):

Re: Is the band among us? |
went for a 'jimmy' (riddle) just prior to the start of the second night at ally pally (Alexandra Palace, Sept 1974) and was absolutely sure it was (keith) 'GOD' (chaux) in the next urinal relieving himself but, heh, he wasn't in disguise .... now I feel cheated. Was too shy/embarrassed (member in hand and all that) to say 'Hi' or anything wimpy like ............

Re: Is the band among us? |
My friend was also at the Oakland Go Ahead show Dec. '86 and had the courage to approach Jerry at his table and kiss his hand. It worked for her- she was 20 with long, blonde hair! Also at the Warfield in 1990, I saw Brent in the balcony at a JGB show. One of my fellow ushers skipped by and "bopped" him on the head. I was mortified, but, hey, it's a Jerry show.

Re: Is the band among us? |
I don't see why they would check this forum. People who post on this forum generally aren't interested in anything post Jerry.
I know that phil has posted on the phil and friends website, and on the furthur.net forum, thats where the fans of the music that is happening NOW are posting.

Re: Is the band among us? |
Or Philzone. If you want to be a troll and spew trollishness about Phil's wife, he'll come on and threaten to beat you up.
We do know Phil used the archives when writing his book. The LMA is an incredible resource for all kinds of live music. But as for the musicians checking our specialized little gabfest here ... you're quite right. They're doing other stuff now.
Frankly, I suspect a few folks here could go mano a mano with band members on dates and who did what solo when and beat them easily. That's just not their focus, and it never was. To paraphrase Jerry, they're done with the music; now we have it :-)
